Southern Adventure Landrover Safari (10 nights/11 days) An adventurous journey by four-wheel drive through the exotic south of Morocco - mountains, desert, deep ravines and exquisite green oases. You’ll be amazed by the breathtaking landscapes. You’ll visit remote villages and witness a lifestyle that has not changed for centuries. You’ll discover traditional weekly markets where Berbers crowd together to buy and sell their wares and catch up on local news. You’ll discover grand kasbahs, once the homes of tribal leaders, and great Saharan sand dunes that lie on the ancient caravan routes from Timbuktu. Your adventure ends in the oriental medina of Marrakech, the ochre coloured city that has ruled these barren lands for a thousand years.

Starts Ouarzazate / Ends Marrakech

Day 1. Ouarzazate

• After a late arrival at the airport of Ouarzazate you will be transferred to the hotel. (No meals included)

Day 2. Mdouar El Kbir

• The landrover will take you south, via the carpet town Taznakht and Foum Zguid. At Foum Zguid the landrover leaves the road and heads through the desert towards the magnificent rock formations of Mdouar El Kbir. Our camp will be set up by the side of a palm oasis for your first night in the desert. Near the campsite fossils can often be found. Camp. (BD)

Day 3. The sand dunes of Erg Cheggaga

• Heading east via the enormous plain of Lac Irriki, which used to be the largest freshwater lake of North Africa, you reach the great sand dunes of Erg Cheggaga. In the afternoon you are free to explore the dunes. Camp. (BLD)

Day 4. Zagora

• You will probably see nomad tents and herds of camels on your trip, continuing east to the little desert village of M'hamid. M'hamid is situated near the vast palm oasis of the southern Draa Valley. After M'hamid you will be heading north to Zagora, a quiet desert town. In the afternoon one of the options is to make a camel ride in the desert. Hotel. (B)

Day 5. Nekob

• Going north along a dirt track through desert mountains you reach the village of Nekob where you will spend the night in a kasbah-hotel with swimming pool. You can either book a room in advance or spend the night in a traditional Berber tent. (BD)

Day 6. Dadès Gorge

• Most of the day the landrover will be following a dirt track through the stunning landscape of the ancient Saghro Mountains. You'll reach the two stone pillars of Bab 'n Ali – a natural rock formation – where you'll have time to explore the nearby gorge or hike to the pillars. In the afternoon continue to the market town Boumalne Dadès, where your route takes you towards the Gorge de Dadès. A dramatic mountain landscape – kasbahs nestled in a green valley that strongly contrasts with the ochre-coloured rocks. You will stay in a hotel near the Gorges de Dadès. Hotel. (B)

Day 7. Todra Gorge

• A spectacular road takes you high into the Atlas Mountains to Msemrir. From here the landrover takes a dirt track heading east and then south to the famous Todra Gorge. Here, in the heart of the High Atlas, nomads wander with their sheep and goats. On the way you'll see small villages in green agricultural valleys. The route ends at the foot of the 300 meter high cliffs of the Todra Gorge. You'll stay in the heart of the Todra Valley. Hotel. (B)

Day 8. Ait Benhaddou

• You follow the route known as the ‘Valley of 1000 Kasbah', and there will be time to stop and visit Kasbah Amerhidil near Skoura and Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate. In the afternoon you arrive at Ait Benhaddou, a vast kasbah complex which is often being used as a film set. Hotel. (BD)

Day 9. Marrakech

• A dirt track takes you through magnificent scenery to the Kasbah of Telouet, once the headquarters of the Glaoui clan. There will be time for a visit before continuing over the highest paved road in Morocco, the pass Tizi 'n Tichka (2260 m). Small Berber villages are perched above green river valleys where farmers are busy working the land. In the evening you will arrive at Marrakech, the ochre coloured exotic town. Hotel. (B)

Day 10. Marrakech

• A day to yourself to explore this interesting royal town. Your hotel is located near the Djemaa-el-Fna Square, the vibrant heart of the city. The activities on the square are continually changing – you'll see snake charmers, musicians, acrobats and storytellers. In the evening open food-stalls are set up with delicious kebabs and salads. Your senses will be reeling in the narrow streets of the medieval medina. Fully loaded donkeys walk back and forth through the narrow streets, which smell of herbs, leather and meat stalls. You will be overwhelmed by the exuberant mix of colourful carpets, fruits, herbs and dyed skeins of wool. In the courtyards the tanners are busy working. Small gateways provide an entrance to the beautifully constructed and decorated sultan's tombs, old palaces and Koranic schools. Hotel. (B)

Day 11. Departure

• Transfer to Marrakech Airport for departure. (B)

Extend your stay
You might like to extend your visit to Morocco by a hiking trip in the High Atlas near Marrakech or by spending a few days on the Atlantic Coast at the old Portuguese fishing port of Essaouira.

• Accommodation is in well-situated tourist-class hotels, three nights with swimming pool. Rooms are equipped with a bathroom. One night accommodation in a Berber Tent (Nekob, day 5) with communal bathroom facilities. Two nights accommodation camping in two person tents (desert, day 2,3) with limited facilities.
• Upgrading the accommodation from Berber tent to hotel-room (day 5) costs € 10 per person In case of a single room request there will be an extra single supplement of € 10
